For me, it has been helpful to think about our travel budget over a long period of time so we can think about the big trips we know we’re going to need to spend a lot on and then try to save on smaller trips.  For example, we want to go to the Great Smoky Mountains this year and have figured out ways to do it really cheaply.  We also want to do a safari in 3 years and are saving up because cheaping out could lead to a terrible experience and we don’t want to risk it.  For a family of 3, we have a travel budget of 4K a year—but we don’t spend that each year—some of it gets saved for the big trips.[/quote]
