We have a parent who just brings his kid to our practices, just showed up and asked the coach a few minuted ahead of time... the Coach was like sure, let's see how it goes. The player was average, not great, but not bad.... totally bypassed the tryouts all together. Fast forward 6 weeks, the kid is still here and making friends on the team. Still not on the team yet, but its very likely they will be come spring time or very least, they will have a leg-up at tryouts next March. -Sometimes, it's the pushy parents that make things happen.
This sounds annoying.
Do you truly know what happened though? Often, the director is involved. Saw the kid and okays them attending practice. The current players/families don't know the whole thing. We have a kid who arrived late to a Club after one team folded (august). First team thought he was great and wanted him--but then there was a full roster so they came back and said keep coming to train with us, play games w/ 2nd team. The level of play is better, faster, etc on first team. You aren't going to progress if you continue to play at a slower speed/lower level. My other kid had a similar scenario and it took a year to make his way to a starting spot on that upper team and then progressed enough to make a D1 squad. So you can gossip all you want---I never even talked to the coach other than the one email asking for a tryout. And then it was through my kid. But, yeah, I guess some parents probably are talking crap w/out knowing I still have never met the coach.
