False. Almost 100% of the time it is because the parents want to keep them but cannot afford them. Now, if it is because of the death of a parent, it is usually the father/husband. Harder for a woman to find a new employed husband to take on her kids than a single father to find a new wife.[/quote]

you forgot about all of the unwanted pregnancies via unmarried women or men who sired a child with a woman other than his wife. There were entire orphanages JUST FOR WOMEN who were pregnant!  My mom was sent to one of those when she got pregnant with me at 16. They tried to make her give me up but she had a nervous breakdown so let her keep me. Not the best decision for me, but I digress.[/quote]

These were not typically called orphanages locally in this area, they were like St. Ann’s in Hyattsville which was at one time one of these and called something like St. Ann’s Home for Infants and Maternity. Pregnant teens were sent to these. [/quote]
