I would say most were horrible and abusive. Run by catholic church or groups in the business of selling babies and young kids.

The death of the parents is what lead most into orphanages back then not parents giving them up

False. Almost 100% of the time it is because the parents want to keep them but cannot afford them. Now, if it is because of the death of a parent, it is usually the father/husband. Harder for a woman to find a new employed husband to take on her kids than a single father to find a new wife.

They are considered group homes.
you forgot about all of the unwanted pregnancies via unmarried women or men who sired a child with a woman other than his wife. There were entire orphanages JUST FOR WOMEN who were pregnant! My mom was sent to one of those when she got pregnant with me at 16. They tried to make her give me up but she had a nervous breakdown so let her keep me. Not the best decision for me, but I digress.

These were not typically called orphanages locally in this area, they were like St. Ann’s in Hyattsville which was at one time one of these and called something like St. Ann’s Home for Infants and Maternity. Pregnant teens were sent to these.

Poverty rather than the death of parents has always been a major factor in children ending up in orphanage care. Today 80% of kids in orphanages have living parents, in the past rates were similar.

No, it also includes abuse and neglect and financial reasons.

The above is true. Also, in the past unwed mothers were forced to give up their babies.

I grew up across the street from a place that used to be an orphanage/childrens home.

I know and have talked to others who lived there. Most of them seem to speak of it fondly. I think some of them came from rough family situations and so the children's home was better.

One of them told me that the years she spent there were the best years of her childhood.

It was a working farm and the kids worked on the farm and learned other skills (construction, lawn care, etc).

They had their own elementary school but went to public high school. There was a bit of a stigma to being from the orphanage, but my dad used to cross the street and play with them all the time. One of them told me with tears in his eyes, "He used to play with us just like we were any other kids."

The foster kids are not all unwanted children or kids of irresponsible teenagers

I have a cousin who is a foster parent, and your last statement is so true. I do think that in theory the Foster system is a way to help parents get their own lives together so they can be better parents. Ideally at least.

She's still pretty messed up. It's amazing that only 5 months could alter her life. Because she couldn't hear well, she did poorly in school and in the job market. Married jerks too but I'm unsure if that's realted.

It's the specific five months she was in there. If it'd been five months when she was 10 years old it'd have been different. 0-6 are the most formative years.

In my family's case, the mother was permanently incapacitated, there were 5 children under 10, going to school was compulsory to age 16, and the father was a factory worker. The foster care/central orphanage was better than home care since the neighborhood was rough and poor. And the father could not remarry since he had a living wife. He had to liquidate their house to give his wife's only assets to the state to pay for her permanent hospital care. She outlived him by about 20 years.
