There are a few things at play. First, the 2016 GOP included the previous voter coalition of traditional conservatives, evangelicals and suburban voters. Trump brought in the MAGAs (aka the basket of deplorables) which made the party viable in the key swing states. Without all 3, the GOP in its current incarnation is not a viable party nationally. With abortion, the dog caught the car and without Trump, the MAGAs will be hard pressed to support a non-Trumpy replacement, so you are left with "traditional conservatives" who generally support - less government intrusion in daily lives (like abortion) strong defense and international leadership (like with Ukraine and Israel) and strong moral values like abiding by the law and the constitution. Sounds like like the current democrat leadership, no? Obviously those traditional conservatives are not for universal healthcare or some of the further left ideas, but what are their ideas other than opposing what democrats propose? In other words, the party opposite the Dems will have to develop a whole new agenda that may align in some areas with the Democrats. My guess over time, is that the progressives take over the Dems, and the moderates and traditional conservatives form a new (Lincoln) party and the MAGAs are left with the husk of the GOP.
