I like a "midaxi" lenght -- something that hits at midcalf or a little lower or higher depending on what flatters you (I find an a-line or fuller skirt on the dress keeps this length from looking frumpy). Legs are covered enough that no contact with seats on transportation or in public spaces. Will not drag on the floor if you need to bend down to pick something up and you won't need to hike it up when going up stairs. Something with pockets and that can be easily layered over. Here's a good option for summer -- I'd bring a lightweight jacket or a linen button down to layer over it (or tie around my waist to be hands free if I got hot): https://www.loft.com/clothing/dresses/catl000013/752878.html
Another in this vein if you want something less fitted -- this would transition to dinner or drinks really easily with a change of shoes: https://www.chicos.com/store/product/Travelers-8482-V-Back-Maxi-Dress/570369701
The Boden version for people who want color or prints (and a higher neckline and sleeves): https://www.bodenusa.com/en-us/amelie-jersey-midi-dress-blue-scattered-brand-spot/sty-d0982-blu
Strappy version in a sport fabric (straps can be worn straight or crossed in back but this is strictly for ladies who don't need to wear a bra): https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=601546082&vid=1&tid=atpl000063&kwid=1&ap=7&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI24PLt_jqhgMV7En_AR0iSgT3EAQYGCABEgKnj_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#pdp-page-content
How do you not freeze on the plane? I've been on flights recently where I'm shivering it's so cold. And I'm in joggers and a big hoodie.
It depends on the flight. I'd wear this on a flight to Florida in April or may knowing that I will want to be in something airy and light the minute I hit the ground there. I can wear a jacket or sweater on the plane but also that's a short flight and I'm not going to be freezing on a daytime flight. I wouldn't wear that on a nighttime flight or anywhere likely to be breezy or brisk on landing. Also regarding people who worry about an emergency -- for international and longer flights I often pack a change of clothes in my carryon. Usually just a pair of leggings and a t-shirt plus fresh underwear and socks. I can usually fit all that in a tiny packing cube or a small ziploc bag. It's for just in case but can also be nice to change at the airport into fresh clothes right when I get off the plane or even just to throw on the leggings during redeye for more comfort.
