I have heard they work but I wish they included a caveat like No soliciting except for Girl Scout cookies, etc. Because they will also keep out anyone you might be ok with knocking.

So this one time . . . when I was a girl scout . . . I was selling girl scout cookies and I knocked on the neighbor's door. When the lady came to the door, I pointed to the "no soliciting" sign and asked what that word was and how do you pronounce it. She pronounced it and said it meant people selling stuff. I said, "Oh! That's me!" She laughed and said no it doesn't mean you. Then she bought two boxes of cookies. I left her house feeling confused and guilty because I had just learned I was a solicitor and she had a sign saying no solicitors but then she said I wasn't a solicitor.
