When I lived in walking distance of the Forest Glen metro station I got them all the time. The sign didn't work. I had a baby and a dog and the door bell would set the dog off.

My sign is about 90% effective. I have even seen folks walk toward the door and then walk away as they see the sign. There is still the 10% of home improvement folks who think they are exempt. That's was the pitbull is for. Seriously, the dog is friendly but he can bark up a storm.

For the past two years, I've gone door to door selling No Soliciting signs. I even offer to install them. Business is good!

I live in a close-in neighborhood with older homes. We get a lot of people selling roofs, sometimes driveway repaving, windows, things like that. Lots of “we’re doing work on Mrs. smith’s house down the block and offering a discount to neighbors”

I have a sign up but it isn’t right next to the doorbell so it often gets missed or they just don’t care.

I just buy my cookies at one of the tables set up outside Petsmart or Safeway.

I don't have a sign, though. If someone knocks on our door, I just shake my head and do a "no thanks" with my hand, then walk away

OP, to answer your question -beyond scouts- NO, they do not work. They are seen. People knock anyway.

I never take my scout to houses that have No soliciting signs unless we actually know the person.

Scouts know that you are not referring to them, especially if you are their neighbors.

It works 90% of the time. When it does not work, I point at the sign they go away 90% of the time. Twice, I've had to shut the door in someone's face. One time, I put my finger on the panic button of the alarm and told the guy I was about to press it if he didn't leave then started counting down from 3. He left. But I mean, seriously, the fact that it took THAT to make that jerk go away made me want to go to the shelter and pick up one of their pit bulls.

Yes I have a nicer version of one. It definitely works 95% of the time.

So this one time . . . when I was a girl scout . . . I was selling girl scout cookies and I knocked on the neighbor's door. When the lady came to the door, I pointed to the "no soliciting" sign and asked what that word was and how do you pronounce it. She pronounced it and said it meant people selling stuff. I said, "Oh! That's me!" She laughed and said no it doesn't mean you. Then she bought two boxes of cookies. I left her house feeling confused and guilty because I had just learned I was a solicitor and she had a sign saying no solicitors but then she said I wasn't a solicitor.
