Optics - that is precisely why Trump encouraged his allies to reject the bipartisan border bill - he didn't want Biden to get credit for any border legislation. That bill was spearheaded by James Lankford, one of the most conservative members of the Senate.[/quote]

It was essentially the GOP’s dream bill that in 2021 they didn’t get from Democratic opposition. They got what they wanted and… crapped in the bathtub for Trump. [/quote]
