I'm OP, and I wrote this post partly because I'd heard of these things that selective schools do in choosing their pool that don't seem fully congruent with the cut-and-dried myschooldc lottery process.
Banneker definitely told our family we would be notified if we were accepted to Banneker. The student ambassador told us he got into Walls and Banneker, which I thought was not possible until the interview…
Maybe he got into his lower ranked choice (let’s say Walls) but then got off the waitlist later and was admitted to his higher ranked choice (Banneker). That is a way a student could get into both. And probably the only way.
DC's friend got into SWW first even though Banneker was ranked higher. They got a call in summer from the waitlist for Banneker and enrolled.
Interesting! I heard no one dares to rank SWW #2!
Why wouldn’t someone “dare” to rank Walls second?
Yeah, that was a weird comment. Dare to consider that Walls isn't everyone's first choice for a variety of reasons. Also, schools don't know how you've ranked them. It's not like a competitive school is able to exclude qualified students who rated them #2 instead of #1.
