NCAA rules require universities that play D1 to maintain a minimum of 16 D1 teams. Schools like Johns Hopkins have a waiver to compete at D1 (mens & womens) when all of their other sports are DIII. Club lacrosse in the SEC, old PAC12, and Non lacrosse playing Big 10 & ACC schools is very competitive.
Correct. About 15 years ago, the NCAA tried to require you to be all in or all out for D1. Hopkins along with a couple of other schools that are primarily D3 sports but have a D1 program (Union college for hockey) fought it and were grandfathered in but no other schools can make that move now. As a note, most B1G and ACC schools (regardless if they offer DI lax) have club lax programs.
