In American culture. Any season. I know it’s old fashioned but I think it is a dig at the bride when significant attendees wear black, like they’re mourning. Fortunately, did not happen to me.
The mother of the groom or anyone else is not insulting the couple by wearing black. Knee length is called The Little Black Dress and it might have sparkles, trim, pattern, or be a more glossy fabric than day or funeral. Or it can go from day to evening via accessories/jewelery etc. Long is fine but one should make sure it doesn't resemble a bridesmaid dress which can be black or almost black. If the bride and her family are from a culture that wouuld never wear black to a wedding then explain The Little Black Dress. I guarentee that there will be guests in black or black in a pattern. One groom mother looked spectacular in black velvet slacks, patterned evening jacket, and exquisite evening bag. In the USA it's no white or ivory or champagne that could photograph as a shade of white.
