I think you pretty much want the dickey zipped and the blazer buttoned or both open. You can do the dickey zipped and the blazer open but it will be a little more obvious that they’re attached. The point is you get the visual of the layer without the bulk of a full sweater under your blazer. You may be thinking of more button-up shirt type dickies that maybe go under a sweater and you wouldn’t take the sweater off. The Veronica Beard ones are mostly more sweater-y I think.
