It’s not hype really it’s just aggressive marketing. It’s a brand that has grown by being a little more expensive with more marketing and advertising especially on social media. See also Jenny Kayne.

Yes you have a shirt underneath. The dickey is attached to the blazer. I think you pretty much want the dickey zipped and the blazer buttoned or both open. You can do the dickey zipped and the blazer open but it will be a little more obvious that they’re attached.
The point is you get the visual of the layer without the bulk of a full sweater under your blazer.
You may be thinking of more button-up shirt type dickies that maybe go under a sweater and you wouldn’t take the sweater off. The Veronica Beard ones are mostly more sweater-y I think.

No it would be super weird without a shirt. The dickey in this case is just like part of the blazer. It would be like wearing a blazer without a shirt under it.

The Dickey adds a layer which adds to the put together look of an outfit
I don't own any of this but have been looking at 'how to make better outfits- look put together'.
VB seems like it adds optional layers without bulk. Even the belt is a layer. Imagine the model picture w out these two items. Blah?
I'm cold often so thin hoodie layer would work for me in lieu of Dickey.
