I have been asked to pay to attend a home holiday party for the first time. I don’t know how different this is from splitting a bill with a group of friends. Is this common? Maybe just new for me.
The only exception I can think of to this being absolutely weird and a no-go is if the event is a fundraiser and the “cover charge” is meant to go to the charity being honored. But for a regular get-together with friends? So I’m supposed to pay a fee, everyone is driving to you while you take our money to strongarm the menu, drink, and atmosphere, and once there I would still be expected to act like a normal thoughtful houseguest because after all, we’re not at a restaurant. Even if I tried to go along with this, I would definitely somehow end up offending you because we’re just not going to be on the same page about what is expected of everybody!
