Congrats to Eastern Senior High School. They had the second highest percentage of Read 180 students meeting the ambitious goal of two years' growth in reading in one year, of all DCPS high schools. This is typically a harder target for HS than MS. This Eastern's first year with the Read 180 program -- and schools usually improve over time. Also let's give a shout-out to Ms. Jarrard, who taught all of the those classes. For those wondering who recieved first place honors it was Columbia Heights Educational Center.
I don't know what that means. Does it matter in any significant way? Would a college admissions officer (as opposed to a local ANC Rep) actually give a damn? How many of them scored as semi-finalists in the NMSQT? I want to be optimistic, but I think I need someone to explain to me the "value" of a DCPS "award" because it looks more like a bone than an effective program.
Read 180 is a remedial reading program. It is for students who are struggling with the skills needed to read and comprehend text at an appropriate grade level. So Eastern seems to be doing a good job helping high school kids who never got appropraite reading skills in their elementary and middle schools.
