Absolutely there's a fine line. Do we even go as far as to categorize which is worse? the burqa, the hijab or the sheitel/tichel worn by Hasidic women? What's the difference after all? Each has a right to practice religion in a safe environment, right?

It is interesting, however, to note that no one is going after the Orthodox or Hasidic female when their belief system (women being modest, that is) is similar to Islam beliefs. Is it only b/c of the tragedy of 9-11?

Personally, I find this practice revolting. My poor colleague, (a PhD in physics) who was in an arranged marriage to an important figure in the Muslim community, divorced him after he beat her. When she was single, we had some in depth conversations about her faith, and she basically stated that "covering" (as in hijab) was a way for her to look inward - to focus on what's really important. At the time, I was too afraid to ask why it wasn't AS important for men to focus inward, too. Now remarried with a child, she is now refusing to even cover.

Also, the French Republic was FOUNDED on the absence of religion. Not freedom of religion. They wanted to eradicate religion, at least in their public spaces, because they saw it as backwards, divisive, ignorant and damaging. Turkey is afraid of the resurgence of islamic fundamentalism. Turkey states in their constitution that they are a secular country and they place certain restrictions on religion. Hardly apt comparisons to a country founded on LIBERTY.

I'm very liberal in most regards and I can't stand to see women wearing those coverings in the U.S. I'm a "when in Rome" kind of person and I would never go to a country that required me to where that stuff. Hijab is a head scarf and covers the hair. It's generally accepted by most Muslims to be Islamic. Niqab is the face veil and historically has not been mandated by Islam. It is mandated in countries like Saudi Arabia, but that's a law of men, not religion.

Women here wear it because of freedom of religion, not freedom of speech. It's necessary to protect freedom of religion as much as possible, even for the religions you might hate. So for now a woman can wear niqab while walking down the street. There have been court rulings that forbid niqab for drivers licence pictures, because driving is a privilege, not a right.

I hate niqab too, but please don't blame it on religion. Most Muslim women, by far, never wear it.

Women wear it b/c the religion claims that men cannot help themselves and will become tempted should they see a woman's face - and other body parts.

As a woman, it's absolutely horrifying to have to accept that. And while I respect their desire to continue on with that charade, I do not respect the reasons behind it. Once again, women are victims of ridiculous beliefs.

So we tolerate this in the US but have issues with Catholicism?

I never bashed the scarf. I said i was disgusted by the veil, but not too worried about it either way.

Well, ok, be that as it may, but it doesn't seem like either of you are enjoying the debate at this point, so it would probably make sense to stay away from political topics and focus on less contentious issues. You may not like their views, but they're your parents, and presumably you love them and they love you, so why not just stick to conversation topics that won't get everyone upset.
