I’m just really concerned about being falsely accused or something being misinterpreted. I never initiate hugs. I usually feint into a high five or dap if a kid goes for a hug. In the past decade, I’ve accepted a hug only twice, both times when the parent was present. It is just not worth risking my job (which I need for health insurance) or freedom. I do a lot of verbal praise and certificates instead.
I totally understand this position. You need to protect yourself from any false accusations. Especially if you are a male teacher. On the other hand, it’s so hard for kids because they are little and most are genuine about their affection and I would say most teachers my kids have had welcome and are OK with hugs.
