We rarely travel for less than a week and don’t want to do laundry or go shopping on vacation so pretty much always check at least one bag. Only time we don’t is short weekend trips. We get free checked bags with several of our credit cards.
You don't get snacks? Bottled water? Alcohol? Unless you're on a cruise or at an all-inclusive resort I think it's pretty rare not to go shopping at all on a vacation. Also, you never eat out or go to attractions near a CVS, grocery store, or convenience store? Popping into a store for some sunscreen is far easier and cheaper than checking a bag and waiting for it to arrive, then lugging it to your destination.
Checking bags is free for us and by the time we use the bathroom we rarely have to wait for the bags. We have brands we like and I don’t like paying tourist area prices for that type stuff. Have we done it in a pinch? Sure, but it’s not my plan from the start.
