We mostly use sunscreen sticks. But, I have not had a problem putting a 4 oz tube in my carry on toiletries.

Except for the ridiculous markup if you're going to someplace like an all-inclusive and not leaving the resort. I've seen sunscreen sold for $30 a bottle at these places. I'm too cheap for that.

And its not just suncreen you'd have to buy. If we were not checking a bag, we'd need to buy shampoo, conditioner, detangler/leave-in hair products (curly hair), shave gel, body wash, etc. I don't need to buy duplicates of everything just to avoid checking a bag. Its not the boogey man people make it out to be.

...or just buy some of the travel sized empty bottles and pour the stuff in.

Forgot to add, I am big on physical sun barriers (long sleeved UPF shirts, wide-brimmed hats, umbrellas on the beach, etc), especially when I travel.

If I didn’t have that, then I would just divide into smaller containers eg nalgene.
If I thought I could buy the brand I use at the other end, I would do that.

+1 to the stick sunscreen. You can also get shampoo and conditioner bars. Which then leaves more room for other needed liquids...

+1. I’m picky about my sun screen so I like to buy it before the trip.

Of those, pretty much all the hotels/rentals we have gotten have had shampoo/conditioner/body wash. Seems like detangler and shave gel are pretty easy to pack small bottles and be done.

Hotel shampoo is not great, even nice hotels. Especially if your hair is curly or has any texture.

I don't always wear sunscreen. In fact, it's pretty rare that I do.

They have stores where you're going. Buy toiletries there if they don't fit in carryon.

You don't get snacks? Bottled water? Alcohol? Unless you're on a cruise or at an all-inclusive resort I think it's pretty rare not to go shopping at all on a vacation.

Also, you never eat out or go to attractions near a CVS, grocery store, or convenience store? Popping into a store for some sunscreen is far easier and cheaper than checking a bag and waiting for it to arrive, then lugging it to your destination.

Checking bags is free for us and by the time we use the bathroom we rarely have to wait for the bags. We have brands we like and I don’t like paying tourist area prices for that type stuff. Have we done it in a pinch? Sure, but it’s not my plan from the start.
