As the one who has always repaired everyone's backpacks in my family, Jansport holds up the best over the years. LL Bean is also really good. The North Face costs twice as much and does not hold up any better at the seams than Jansport or LL Bean, and for rips that occur away from seams or on straps, they are actually harder to fix because the material is not as good quality. You basically have to get a swatch of fabric and make a patch -- that never matches. The zippers are the most critical point of failure in any backpack, and TNF zippers are not better than Jansport in that regard. With TNF you are paying a premium for the brand name, not durability.
Disagree on recent Jansports. I bought them for my kids a couple yrs ago and my the end of the school year there were holes in the bottoms and seams ripping. They don’t drag them or do anything out of ordinary. At first I chalked it up to fluke and sent it in for replacement. They have a warranty but it takes several weeks-months to process. Same thing happened again the following year and also with my second child’s. So I turned to LL bean and haven’t had these issues.
