The North Face costs twice as much and does not hold up any better at the seams than Jansport or LL Bean, and for rips that occur away from seams or on straps, they are actually harder to fix because the material is not as good quality. You basically have to get a swatch of fabric and make a patch -- that never matches.
The zippers are the most critical point of failure in any backpack, and TNF zippers are not better than Jansport in that regard. With TNF you are paying a premium for the brand name, not durability.
I agree that Jansport wins for durability. However, Northface definitely wins for ergonomics and back support/shoulder comfort, which is a consideration if your kid walks to and from school and carries a heavy load.
