It’s interesting to see the “grew up on the Midwest” posters mention American Chinese restaurants as if they indicate a more expanded palate. The Chinese restaurants people are talking about are flavored with sugar, MSG, and soy sauce. Is soy sauce so different? I would think Indian (even Americanized) has more “spice/flavor.” I’m an Asian-American who cannot eat most Chinese because of the batter and sugar. It’s way too sweet and oily.
Wouldn't say it's an example of "expanded palate" so to speak, just was the first foray into a flavor that wasn't just salt, pepper, maybe garlic or italian. So it was different to me even if the only the Americanized version of it, as it was just different than anything I'd had at that point in my life. I guess soy and sweet is still a unique flavor if you never had it at all.
