Interesting read. We were Overlee members for years in the late 90 and early 2000s and had kids on the swim team. Decades later and they’re still the top of the heap? I’m honestly curious how that happens. Don’t you have to live in the neighborhood to join the pool? Do they recruit? Back in our day, at least, literally everyone on the team lived in the neighborhood. We knew them all. I never liked the swim team only because the meets were long and boring and the parents got on my nerves. I have a thing against rich white privilege even though my kids fit the stereotype. The kids had fun though, so I smiled and sucked it up. I never sensed any more competitiveness at Overlee and the swim team than any other thing/activity in North Arlington more generally. I find it hard to believe that things are dramatically different in neighborhoods outside of Overlee. Maybe prolonged success breeds jealousy and contempt - like the Yankees or Notre Dame football? But in the end they are only neighborhood pools having silly summer swim meets with other neighborhoods with very little at stake. So it it really fair to say that Overlee parents suck and are super competitive if other parents from other neighborhoods themselves care so much about all of this bullshit that they’re starting threads about it? Isn’t that a case of pot calling kettle?
I think a lot of these threads are good natured, with questions, etc. I would say most of the teams that my kids swim against the kids on the other team are lovely. Kind, sweet, etc. This season the kids with their opposing swimmers would tell one another how great they are or were. Tell them that they are a fast swimmer (to opposing team), etc. High five one another or shake hands prior to the race. That to me is summer swim, everyone raising one another up (we are a D7 pool). The Big Three are NOT that. They are white privilege and obnoxious. Yelling about their superiority and denigrating those not in their cult. It is sad. There is no envy here.
I wonder if it is tied to the rivalry among the 3. They face other every year with intense competition which leads to natural rivalries. That could explain somewhat the behavior when facing each other. It becomes a real problem when it leaks over to competitions when they are facing the other 99 teams in the NVSL. The swimmers and parents get used to acting a certain boorish way. I kind of wish it were possible for them to leave the NVSL entirely and just face each other twice every year.
