I'm really beginning to question the county leadership. Anyone with half a brain would know that if you built up DTSS to be a nice nightlife area, you'd need more police. Kind of like building Clarksburg without Town Center retail and proper sewer lines. I'm not picking exclusively on the current council and executive -- this is over decades. We are educated and smart, but our leadership doesn't act like it.
There usually is lots of police in that area. But this happened in the parking garage (maybe because there are lots of police elsewhere). I am not sure how realistic it is to expect police to have blanketed the parking garage. Perhaps the bigger question is why businesses like Society and other clubs continue to even be allowed to operate. Maybe the county could at least terminate the liquor license, or not allow alcohol past midnight. Nightlife is great, but not when the establishments have a pattern of bringing criminals and violence to otherwise peaceful neighborhoods.
I have a lot of bias against the Society lounge owner. He has a federal conviction for trafficking huge amounts of marijuana from out of state to his restaurant in Laurel. He purchased Society with drug money. The federal government seized ownership of it. Not sure how he got it back but I hear the liquor license is in his sister's name. Having said that, over the past couple of years, he has worked very hard and proactively to prevent any violence associated with his restaurant. He has security and checks for customers for weapons, and pays off duty police to patrol around the area. So while there are problems around there, I don't think Society is it.
