Tell your kid you need to talk and that you had some real problems with her behavior. Then you can ask, "What do you think I'm talking about?" She may want to 'fess up, or you may need to lay it out. If you want, you can ask, "Can you tell me what that was about?" It might be that she says she was really hoping for some Lululemon gift cards because people teased her about her Old Navy shorts. Now, is this something one should be bratty about? Absolutely not. But everyone has their hopes and embarrassments and it will help you to know where she's coming from. Then you can say, or tell her, How else can you act when you're having these feelings?

Once she's done laying out her thoughts, you can clarify that there is no room for refusing to help with breakfast or refusing to be in family photo. Those are just things we do. But you look forward to having better communication that ensures fewer of what are effectively tantrums. This shows that you are compassionate and willing to listen AND that you are in charge.

As for Instagram--one of the cutest kiddies I know is a bit of a monster whose mom goes to extravagant lengths to get those photos. Social media can be so great and can be so toxic. Definitely do not compare your life to someone else's Instagram. Comparison is the thief of joy. [/quote]
