I can buy a week's worth of groceries at Trader Joe's for $50, and I live in San Francisco. Here's my tip: don't buy prepared foods or sushi if you want your money to go further.
Rice and beans have always been extremely cheap. I'm not so poor that I have to eat only rice and beans and canned tomatoes. I did that in my grad student days. Inflation in the supermarkets has been real and serious in the last two years.
I was shocked to see that beans are now nearly $4/can. And good soup is $4-6.
Where are beans $4 a can? They are .72 a can at Lidl and .79 a can at Harris Teeter. Soup is definitely expensive but once you start making your own, you’ll never go back. My teens used love certain canned soups. After homemaking soup for a few years, I recently bought some canned, knowing we’d have a few rushed afternoons, and they said it was garbage. You will Save a ton of money, have a massive amount for days, and having it 1000x tastier by making it yourself. Get an instapot (not evaporation of the liquid) and get prechopped items if you are rushed.
