NP = and no one may care but OP is probably still trying to get some sense of what people have on, day to day. Is it sundresses? Shorts and a t-shirt? Like what do you wear on a random Tuesday when you're there? What do you wear to go out to the nicest restaurant on the island? What do you wear to walk around town?

Come on, though. I live near a beach and I can tell you about different vibes in different areas. In one, people tend to get a little more done up, especially if they are going out to eat. In another, it's a point of pride to never wear anything newer than five years old. Where I am, there's a bit more of a hipster vibe. You can surely help OP out a little bit. She's coming to a very wealthy vacation island and just wants to look like she fits in. Can you just give her a little bit more of a hint of what you and your friends are usually wearing?[/quote]

Sure! And the "let's have a conversation" method of doing that sussing out is just to ask: Hey, anyone been to this place? What did you see people wearing?

I have no objection to people wearing a beret in Paris if it makes them feel good, or Lily and VV in Nantucket if they want to cosplay Being In Nantucket. But if what they actually want is to walk around feeling like they aren't LARPing around then I think it is really pretty unobjectionable to ask the question OP asked.
