What do you typically wear to go to the beach, to lunch, or window shopping in the summer? Wear that. What kind of an answer are you looking for, OP? if there was an obvious dress code there would be an obvious answer, but there truly is no uniform.
Come on, though. I live near a beach and I can tell you about different vibes in different areas. In one, people tend to get a little more done up, especially if they are going out to eat. In another, it's a point of pride to never wear anything newer than five years old. Where I am, there's a bit more of a hipster vibe. You can surely help OP out a little bit. She's coming to a very wealthy vacation island and just wants to look like she fits in. Can you just give her a little bit more of a hint of what you and your friends are usually wearing?
Ok, this is a fair response (I'm the pp you're responding to) but I literally just wear in Nantucket what I wear to any other beach. I don't visit often, but have visited friends a few times in recent years. I wear cotton or linen wide leg pants and at shirt to the beach, usually- same as I wear to my local beach in NY (not Hamptons) and when I'm visiting family in Florida, and last time I was on a beach in Spain. Sometimes I wear an old soft H&M sundress, sometimes a longer cotton dress I got from jcrew. In other words, the same three or four outfits I wear to every single beach I've been to in the past 5 years.

Southern Style. Hand smocked dresses for little girls, saddle shoes, white knee socks and smocked JohnJohns for your DS. Giant bow for DD and Little Lord Fauntleroy haircut for DS.
Wear a matching/coordinated Mother Daughter/Son smocked ensemble. No makeup save for a frosty orange lipstick. Neckline of your dress high enough to conceal heavily sun damaged décolleté.

Whenever I’m going somewhere and want to figure out the vibe, I go onto instagram and looked at tagged photos. If people want to dress up like they’re in costume (for example, a red beret in Paris), they should just own it.
Sure! And the "let's have a conversation" method of doing that sussing out is just to ask: Hey, anyone been to this place? What did you see people wearing?
I have no objection to people wearing a beret in Paris if it makes them feel good, or Lily and VV in Nantucket if they want to cosplay Being In Nantucket. But if what they actually want is to walk around feeling like they aren't LARPing around then I think it is really pretty unobjectionable to ask the question OP asked.
Yes of course, who cares anyway, blah blah blah. But part of the fun of planning and anticipating a trip is thinking about what you will wear on that trip, and if it brings OP some joy to imagine herself looking nice in Nantucket - well who amongst us. Except the two PPs who I guess live there and so are too cool to think about clothes at all.
Why doesn’t OP help herself and do a little research? Pinterest, IG, etc. you seem overly invested in defending OP who is a lazy sack of bones.
