Okay so maybe the wrong place to ask this but my kid scored in the 98th percentile and is category 9A but he really struggles with reading. I know cogat is about how a kid thinks not how they read but do you think it could suggest a learning or reading disorder? Or at least something going on? We did an assessment and are waiting in results but just curious if anyone else has experienced this because I am impatient. Not sure if I should go ask on the special needs forum instead.
Was your kid taught to read using phonics/science of reading? Check out podcast Sold a Story
This yr is phonics. Last yr I think was still the old method that APS used but he did have phonics books last yr too. He has had a tutor for 3 years doing phonics. Last yr he was writing stories in writers workshop, but they don't do that this yr and he has refused all work. I think something bigger is going on, just a struggle to figure it out.
Yes, these are big red flags, I would talk to you child's teacher about am evaluation (or get one privately) Having three years of tutoring and still struggling is not right
Yeah, it has just been so weird because the first year was virtual kinder so it was kind of a mess. Then last year things were still a mess but this is the first year we have really had a regular school and he still struggles. We did get a private evaluation just waiting on the results and just lots of anxiety until I get answers (hopefully soon). Sometimes I think he just doesn't want to do it and then I don't know what to do with that. Like he will struggle to read words at home with me but then points out large adn complex words when we are in the stores. It is like a book is too much for him but individual words are fine? Not sure what that is a sign of.
