I have been in DC for 13 years. Very fortunate when it comes to crime. -When I lived in Columbia Heights for 15 months, one night we had gun shots on our block. -When I lived in Adams Morgan, someone tried to steal my Vespa and it was so badly damaged that it was a total loss by insurance. -Now live in Glover Park and only crime has been porch theft (twice in five years). Both times the thieves were white males who looked like yokels from West Virginia; they were clearly not locals by their appearance.
I don't consider hearing gunshots to make me a victim of a crime -- I used to hear gunshots routinely when I lived in Petworth, like at least once or twice a month (including once when someone was murdered in our alley), but I wouldn't say that means I've personally been a victim of anything.
