Car stolen x2
Car broken into many times
Storage shed broken into and tools stolen
Husband held up at gunpoint (many many years ago while crossing meridian hill park at 3am so that one’s on him)

This isn't true: I've lived in the District for 22 years and never been the victim of any crime. (It's possible my mini-grill was stolen off my back porch when I lived in Dupont Circle in the mid-2000s, but I think actually the condo board president for the complex where I lived took it because she thought it violated the rules.)
I do think you are lucky. My guess is that most folks living in the DMV (not just DC) have experienced some sort of low level property crime. I lived in DC for 10 years and had my Ipod grabbed on the metro (I was sitting by the door and had it on my lap, it was a "grab and go". Not "violent" IMO. I also have had cars rifled through in Arlington and MoCo. Most of the property owners I know in DC (either car / homes or both) have experienced some sort of low level crime (like stuff getting stolen out of your car or vandals taking or destroying something on your porch. I don't know many people who have experienced a violent crime. A few muggings at weapon point is about it very late at night.

Someone grabbed my phone on the metro once (metro police got it back much to my surprise)
Someone stole my bike from the La Plata park and ride another time (this one is entirely on me -- I left it overnight and didn't have a U lock)
And my favourite: the time someone stole my kickstand (yes, just the kickstand) from my bike

Multiple car break-ins when we lived in Mt. Pleasant. A guy also exposed himself to my spouse in the Mt. Pleasant library when she was there with our 2-year-old.

I don't consider hearing gunshots to make me a victim of a crime -- I used to hear gunshots routinely when I lived in Petworth, like at least once or twice a month (including once when someone was murdered in our alley), but I wouldn't say that means I've personally been a victim of anything.

I recently moved out of Van Ness (during the height of the pandemic) but when I was there my ground level apartment was broken into once. Pretty sure it was a contractor due to the details of how they enetered the unit but otherwise, no. I lived in NW DC for over 10 years and that was the only thing that occurred.

I've lived in DC for 20 years and the only crime I've ever been victim to was having my car broken into (which has happened a bunch of times). It's very annoying but not particularly scary.
I've known a number of people who have been mugged or whose homes have been broken into while they were home. These are always scary and it's really upsetting and makes you more aware of your own safety (or lack thereof). But this is over 20 years, so it's not a common occurrence at all. Thinking back just in the last 10 years, I can only think of two examples. One resulted in a nasty head injury that was very hard to recover from. Both happened late at night in nightlife corridors. I will note that I don't go out at night, and definitely not by myself, very often anymore. Not out of fear, just getting older and having young kids at home makes this very rare for me.
Then there are the quality of life crimes. This includes my car break ins, but also stuff like having a crime scene on your street or having your day to day life disrupted by violent crime. This is honestly what has pushed out most of the people who I know who have chosen to leave DC because of crime. It's not that they have personally been assaulted, it's than they don't like walking their kids past crime scenes, hearing about two more shootings in their neighborhood, hearing about the uptick in muggings or carjackings. I have only started to feel this way within the last year or so, where it has felt like violent crime in the city is getting worse, not better. But it's more about this general feeling of violence around me than being personally implicated. We probably aren't leaving anytime soon but that's partly due to the real estate market and interest rates. If rates were low and it was easier to buy right now, I think we'd be house shopping in close in suburbs this spring.

Yes multiple thefts. Was also present during the recent shooting in van ness. Bullets hit storefront windows where I was standing. Happily live in a safe md suburb now. RIP dc!

I was mugged at weapon point on the metro and the metro manager and police didn’t care. They acted like I was a burden and I was really bothering them. They never took my name or a report.
