I've lived in DC for 20 years and the only crime I've ever been victim to was having my car broken into (which has happened a bunch of times). It's very annoying but not particularly scary. I've known a number of people who have been mugged or whose homes have been broken into while they were home. These are always scary and it's really upsetting and makes you more aware of your own safety (or lack thereof). But this is over 20 years, so it's not a common occurrence at all. Thinking back just in the last 10 years, I can only think of two examples. One resulted in a nasty head injury that was very hard to recover from. Both happened late at night in nightlife corridors. I will note that I don't go out at night, and definitely not by myself, very often anymore. Not out of fear, just getting older and having young kids at home makes this very rare for me. Then there are the quality of life crimes. This includes my car break ins, but also stuff like having a crime scene on your street or having your day to day life disrupted by violent crime. This is honestly what has pushed out most of the people who I know who have chosen to leave DC because of crime. It's not that they have personally been assaulted, it's than they don't like walking their kids past crime scenes, hearing about two more shootings in their neighborhood, hearing about the uptick in muggings or carjackings. I have only started to feel this way within the last year or so, where it has felt like violent crime in the city is getting worse, not better. But it's more about this general feeling of violence around me than being personally implicated. We probably aren't leaving anytime soon but that's partly due to the real estate market and interest rates. If rates were low and it was easier to buy right now, I think we'd be house shopping in close in suburbs this spring.
