I don’t remember any innuendo.  Sex of any kind didn’t seem to enter into the show. What was so clear (that I missed entirely), that she was a lesbian?

But they wouldn’t make the pretty blonde queer because everything was confined to subtext then. Now they could do that, and make it canon, and kids wouldn’t bat an eye at it. Many parents, OTOH, would clearly be upset.
