There is a new thread on the middle school magnets every few weeks. Every time one peters out a new one is started. Same arguments over and over again. Keep your eyes open for these words and phrases:

equity over excellence
highly abled
low FARMS
high FARMS
Larla
CoGAT
99%
game the system
lawsuit
lottery
laughed out of court

There will always be people unhappy no matter what the process is. But I think the fact that this keeps cropping up so regularly signifies that the process that is currently in place is insufficient and leaving large numbers of students with academic needs unmet and ignored. [/quote]

The problem with MCPS is lack of transparency and lack of science based research to back up the system they are using. There are many school systems that have overhauled their magnet programs but usually they have been very open with the exact process for how points are awarded to each child and citations for studies that support their system. They are not just making it up on the fly and then refusing to release information about the selected students and outcomes. They are usually very clear about their goals and the changed mission of the magnet programs going forward.

MCPS changes things every year and they seem to lie about it. There is way too much secrecy in the MCPS process and they are not being held accountable.[/quote]
