It could mean that the perpetrators were hopped up on drugs, and/or were robbing from the man in order to get drug money, which is why they went overboard and beat him to death. Being in a concrete starirwell, I guess it could also be that things got out of hand fast -- they pushed him hard, he fell backwards down the stairs, and they fled. It's awful.[/quote]
