I sometimes think that the builders have a deal going the retirement communities to make it so that we can't stay at home. Families throw cash away to the assisted living corps because grandma can't wheel into a shower?
There is more to assisted living communities than being able to get into the shower. Depending on your eyesight, physical strength, balance, acuity, and other factors, you may not be able to cook for yourself, clean up after yourself, get out of the house to see people, cut your toenails, etc. At some point, living what seems like a normal life is actually easier if there's a significant support staff right outside the door of your accessible apartment.
Yes, but often, a family can offset costs by hiring someone to come in if the physical plant (home) is handicapped accessible. I just makes sense to have one MBR that is handicapped accessible on the main floor. Not just for the elderly, but also for a handicapped person.
