I think there's some truth to this.  When I joined they told me salary was non-negotiable because they have this matrix that they agreed to with the union.  Ok, I understand that, treat everyone fairly and all that.  I find out later that they applied the matrix incorrectly and there is nothing I can do about it.

A few years later, the union gets management to agree to review everyone's salary against the matrix to make sure it was applied correctly.  Sounds great, except HR never bothered to review my application and of course there's nothing anyone can do about it.  So, on the one hand there's this matrix that supposedly keeps pay uniform and prevents you from negotiating for a pay increase and on the other hand there's no remedy when it is applied incorrectly.[/quote]
