17 years in DC. I can’t believe how much I think about moving out of the city these days. It’s so much a part of my identity that it’s painful to realize I’m unhappy here. The suburbs don’t call me. I’m a city person — I like living in high density, like apartment living. This is purely about frustration/dissatisfaction with DC. And I’m in total agreement on Bowser. I have my issues with City Council but at least some members are actually engaged in trying to address the city’s problems and respond to constituent concerns. Bowser is truly an empty suit. The greatest “accomplishment” of her administration is painting Black Lives Matter on 16th and getting featured in the national media as a result. But has she undertaken any actual reform of the police department, addressed DC’s school to prison pipeline, or made any effort to deal with skyrocketing housing costs that are largely displacing black residents? Nope. I work with city government a lot and do you want to know who actually runs this city? A handful of big time developers and a couple lobbying blocks (and no, the teachers union isn’t one— they have very little power). This city operates efficiently for this two groups and no one else. We don’t have Congressional representation, but it’s hard to say we even have local government representation either. Individual voters, and even most voting blocs, have almost no say in what happens in this city. I’ve just about had it.
