I love all the people concerned about “safety” who are moving to suburbs where they spend far more time driving their kids around in cars, an actual risk to health and safety.

"Crime among teens skyrocketed everywhere that closed high schools. Same story in NYC, California, etc. The teens are getting vaccinated now and we will see a drop moving forward."

You would certainly hope so, right? The only problem with that theory is that crime was escalating way before the pandemic. I started getting itchy to leave in 2019- especially when there was a daytime homicide at Capitol South. That was a bit too close to home for me. My prognosis for cities right now is that crime is here to stay for years to come as unsupported police take a step back and communities clamor for a softer touch with criminals. I'd love to be wrong.

What about armed carjackings? This was a rarity in my neighborhood and now I feel like there is one every week if not more.

Kids back in school will resolve this issue and a lot of the recent increase in crime.

Get a vehicle with a manual transmission.

I graduated years ago and never looked back. I even threw away the special badge you get for living "in the District"

They’re not fully opened in the districts surrounding DC in MD or VA. Seems bizarre that you’re considering this in May, since the school year is almost over.

Most schools in the rest of the country have been going five days for awhile. We're concerned we're still going to be in hybrid in the fall. The mayor doesnt seem to care whether kids are getting an education or not.

I also left a couple months ago (would have hit 18 years in June). So worth it, OP! DC is not getting better- it's going to get worse. I'm not sure we're going to see good times like those experienced in 2010-2015 for many years to come. The city is intent on driving high earners who care about safety and quality of life issues out of the city. It's dedicated to favoring criminals over victims and hamstringing police and criminal justice. Fine then- it can enjoy its descent back into the 90s. Join me by exiting- it's the only thing governments understand as their tax base evaporates and businesses go elsewhere.

17 years in DC. I can’t believe how much I think about moving out of the city these days. It’s so much a part of my identity that it’s painful to realize I’m unhappy here.

The suburbs don’t call me. I’m a city person — I like living in high density, like apartment living. This is purely about frustration/dissatisfaction with DC.

And I’m in total agreement on Bowser. I have my issues with City Council but at least some members are actually engaged in trying to address the city’s problems and respond to constituent concerns. Bowser is truly an empty suit. The greatest “accomplishment” of her administration is painting Black Lives Matter on 16th and getting featured in the national media as a result. But has she undertaken any actual reform of the police department, addressed DC’s school to prison pipeline, or made any effort to deal with skyrocketing housing costs that are largely displacing black residents? Nope.

I work with city government a lot and do you want to know who actually runs this city? A handful of big time developers and a couple lobbying blocks (and no, the teachers union isn’t one— they have very little power). This city operates efficiently for this two groups and no one else. We don’t have Congressional representation, but it’s hard to say we even have local government representation either. Individual voters, and even most voting blocs, have almost no say in what happens in this city. I’ve just about had it.
