No, you don't have to study theology, but at least reading the Old Testament might be a start (albeit one that most self-professed "Christians" aren't willing to take). OP's musing makes it seem like OP doesn't even have the most superficial understanding of what, say, Exodus says about god's relationship with Israel.

Seriously, I wonder what the results would be if you could get a truly accurate % of Christians who have actually read the Bible -- not just sat in church and have it read to them one Sunday at a time. I think way less than half, certainly if you include the Old Testament. I'm consistently amazed at the Biblical illiteracy of people who claim to be devout.[/quote]
