You're following what I think is the perfect approach to vehicle ownership: buy a high-quality versatile vehicle that you'll be satisfied with for the long haul, keep it and maintain it well for ~10 years, then sell or trade it in. Where people get caught up with the whole "dealer says they want to buy my car and will give me a great deal on it" thing is when people trade in a 2 or 3-year-old car based on the false impression that this is some magical event they must take advantage of right now.
