Really????

Howard county barely cracks the top 10, with just one school. LOL
US News rankings change literally every year. Both which schools rank in certain spots, and the methodology.
The Maryland Report Card is a much more objective source to use.
Not saying that one school system is better than the other, just that US News rankings are garbage.

Severna Park is nice if you like an area that is 90% white where 50% of the people who graduate from Severna Park High School attend Anne Arundel Community College for a semester before dropping out and becoming an office assistant or real estate agent for the rest of their life, and most of the other 50% go to Salisbury or Towson. Most of the people that live there are from there and that’s why they think it’s some rich white la la land even though it’s not very different from the surrounding areas socio-economically, save for Severna Park having 0 poor people. I grew up there and there’s much better areas in AA County with more diversity and a way better commute to DC.

Sometimes Chesapeake High School is included among those schools as well. Personally, I think South River very overrated among locals. The STEM program inflates the test scores of the school, and people in Anne Arundel tend to use the # of white students when defining a “good school,” and I think that’s a huge reason there’s a love-affair with South River HS among the locals. They’re drawn to the whiteness of the school.
Severna Park is considered to be a pressure cooker, though it’s not as bad as Whitman, B-CC, etc. At Severna Park HS, they push students all the students to go to college and don’t really place an emphasis on where to go. At the Ws and B-CC, they push all students to go to college and students feel extra pressure to get into prestigious colleges.
Really though, all the high schools in all these counties have a great college prep program, offer tons of APs, and have lots of opportunities. Just find an area you like.
We're zoned for South River and our children will not be attending - just not a fan of the student population. The only HS in AA Co I would even consider is Severna Park. But that makes for a less than ideal commute into DC. And AACPS is a joke - they will be lucky to get the high schools open for full time, five day a week learning in the next two years.

Atholton is no less of an “upscale money school” than Marriotts Ridge and Glenelg. Don’t know why people talk about Atholton like it’s some poor school or like it has a lot of socio-economic diversity because it’s not true. It’s one of the wealthiest Howard schools and home prices there are high.
People who remember what Atholton used to be think of it this way. The development in that area is relatively new.
I know that Atholton was once considered the poor school of HoCo, but for the past 15 years, it has been a quite affluent school.
Look we are zoned for Atholton and it is not in the same wealth category as the Ellicott City high schools and the western county high schools. We have a ton of students that come from the older townhomes along Murray Hill, the apartments near Kings Contrivance, and the surrounding areas. It's regular middle class surburbia. Yes, it is now a step up from the poorer zones it used to be but it has come up to the middle of the road income level. There are some higher priced homes, but nowhere near the amount you can get in the north and west parts of the county.
