Why does everyone care how "smart" a potential student is? TJ is a school for those interested in science and technology. And before people chime in with how challenging the school is, every school that specializes in something is challenging.
Did you go there? Doesn't sound like it. I can't imagine a TJ student saying this. They all know a 3.5 GPA in an FCPS middle school is not enough to do well at TJ in its current state. Instead of worry about smartness, how about capability? That's something not innate right? I little harder to argue that the school is being discriminatory. TJ is supposed to be a school for people both interested and capable of learning at a high level in science and technology. A 3.5 GPA and Algebra II does not measure someone's interest in science and technology nor their capability in learning at a high level in those subjects. That's why the lottery is a joke.
