OP how old are you? If one of you has a government job, that seems like a low combined salary unless you’re relatively young and low on the GS scale. A step one GS13 makes $100k. So with time, that HHI will go up. I’m a single parent government employee-I make about $150k and get a little bit of child support. I just ignore the ridiculous “I can’t live on $300k” posters. I’m doing fine. I make more than the average household in the DC area, and so do you.
We're in our 40s. Not all government jobs are federal, and state and local governments pay less than the feds. Our income was a smidge higher before we had kids but I took a hit in my salary when I switched from a staff position at a non-profit to become a self-employed consultant at the same place (in order to create more flexibility for ourselves around childcare). We do sometimes envy the federal salary scale, but my husband's job offers benefits we know he wouldn't get as a fed, like generous family leave policies and a pension. And we are grateful for our salaries. I remember when our combined salaries went over 100k and thinking "wow I never thought I'd make this much." We both grew up working class in places where the only people who had a lot of money were doctors and judges, and even they would be considered middle class compared to the money people make in DC. I don't feel deprived at all, but my eyes definitely get big at times when I talk to people who seem to have a very different perspective on money (of which there are many in this area).
