I acquired one of my cats when its stupid former owner let a 20 year old deaf cat roam! It looked terrible due to age and I assumed it was homeless. This was in an area of other community cats. AN otherwise educated person on my neighborhood listserv recently gave away a fancy automatic litter box because she said her cat had decided to become an outdoor cat. No her cat did not decide that.
