The think about the poor guy with a 1550 who graduates 2nd in his class of 25 at some rural Texas school. Ouch.
There are many, many slots left open for non-auto admits at UT-Austin (and the other Texas schools). If you’re outside of the top 6% it just means you’re not *automatically* admitted. The SAT range for auto admits is 1150-1400, while the range for non-auto admits from Texas is 1210-1420 — so it’s not like it’s even that hard. Were you under the impression that you have to be in the top 6% otherwise you’re automatically rejected?
Not at all. But its a bit unfair that he would even have to compete while the 50th ranked kid at some big school gets auto admitted. Its just a bad system. And if anyone doubts the difficulty, go peruse UT Austin on CC or reddit
The system is just more formal and transparent than other state schools’ systems. We know that at UVA, for example, there are informal limits to how many NoVa students will be admitted vs SW Virginians, and yes the NoVa students often have higher GPAs and test scores.
