FWIW, if she has been living in Great Britain, she likely was quite competent driving on the left hand side of the road. I've lived in Japan and it is amazing how quickly you learn to drive on the left. And, in Japan, if an American is involved in an accident, the American is almost always held responsible. At least, it was that way a while ago. I had a friend who was in a cab involved in an accident, and the cabbie told her to leave or she would be held responsible--even though she was his passenger.
