No FCPS/ APS public school had unhooked UVA admits with anything below about a 4.2W. And that’s dicey. My kids at TJ and it’s a 4.2-4.3. She may love it. She needs a solid Plan B. And no one knows yet how EA will play out.
How can you know that?
SCHEV Data. 25% UVA last year was 4.21. And unhooked NOVA kids aren’t getting in at 25% except TJ where GPAs are lower. 25% is URM, legacy, athletes, Z list and ROVA rural. You aren’t safe until 75% as a white or Asian NOVA kid. That’s a 4.49. And UVA says that the care a lot more about GPA than SAT. A 1580 won’t solve a 4.05 GPA at UVA. Maybe at WM. But not UVA. TJ has the lowest GPAs for in state schools from NOVA because so many classes (Physics 1, WH, intro CS, Geo Systems, etc) are mandatory but aren’t AP and don’t get the AP weight. And they grade very hard. The scattergram says an unhooked kid has no chance at UVA from TJ without a 4.2-4.3. WM— yes. Boys can get in with a 4.0 and 1500+. But UVA priorities GPAs. But prove me wrong. Find a HS that is not primarily URM and check scattergram. I guarantee the handful of sub 4.2 kids who get the green check from Langley, Oakton, Madison, etc are recruited athletes or big time legacies. And that’s 5-10 out of 400. You don’t do a kid a favor by pretending a sub 4.0W unhooked FCPS kid will get in based on one great semester. The math isn’t there. So submit an app. Aim for the stars. But have a plan B and don’t let your kid start to think UVA is the only good option. WM might work ED with the SAT. JMU is on the rise. So is CNU. VCU is great for health and arts. Find a plan B. And BTW— my TJ kid has just over a 4.0. Not even applying to UVA. Doing WM ED with a 1540 SAT and a bump for being a boy. You aren’t the only one with a kid who isn’t getting into UVA. If
