Genuine sadness and occasional tears only shuts down communication with emotionally immature people. If you understand emotions,and how to deal with your own and respect others’, you aren’t easily manipulated by them and you can still engage without shaming or shunning the person for their tears. If you get lucky you may be able to help them stop crying. People that get unnerved or frustrated at someone else’s hurt comes off as selfish. My response to anyone’s tears is to be attentive. Maybe I can’t comfort, or console, or agree - but I think the worst hung to do at that point is to shut down a conversation and isolate them with their feelings. It’s your spouse, if you can’t cry in front of them who can you cry with?
